Hi everyone,
I'm resigning as MLUG secretary/treasurer. This means I will no longer
have the ability to do anything in this organization short of read the
list and attend meetings. For most things, contact Jay. For expo stuff,
contact Blake. For server things, contact Adam. I am not mad at anyone,
even those who express anger at me.
If anyone was offended by my April Fool's joke, I'm sorry. It's evident
that some people just can't appreciate jokes or take things lightly. I
love linux and open source software to death. I use it at home and work. I
read HOWTOs and O'Reilly books religiously. Linux is what I truly love. If
anyone took my joke web page
(http://mlug.missouri.edu/hacked-index.html) personally, I apologize. It
was inappropriate. I thought it would be humourous; my dark sense of humor
is often taken as insulting. I'm truly sorry.
I urge you not to turn this into a thread. Contact me off the list if you
have any pro/con feelings about this.
If my account exists after tonight, I will continue to read the lists and
do my best to only post insightful and meanignful things to the list,
despite my poor track record. I aplogize to anyone I ever flamed,
offended, or insulted. I'm not the nicest person in the world, but I
really don't mean any of it. Everyone in MLUG is great, and I hope this
organization goes far. We have such great diversity. I wouldn't trade
a thousand RHCE people for anyone on our list. Our diversity is our
strength, speaking of both our differing personalities as well as
technical backgrounds.
I might show up at the occassional meeting, expo, etc. I'll continue to
follow the list from EMAIL:PROTECTED if my account isn't
deleted. With all luck, I should be in school for another 2-4 years
working on my dual majors. I will contribute any good I can to this
organization from now on.
To the people in office and those who will be in office soon: don't lose
motivation. Keep going. Motivation made the open source movement as
glorious as it is now. Motivation like this is what will make MLUG
great. Pessimism will only serve to destroy it. Remain optimistic in light
of failure and shortcomings, for it will only serve everyone better. Try
to only do good, and good shall come of it.
To everyone else: don't let the bad things that have happened steer you
away. MLUG is run by humans. Humans make mistakes. If you see something
foul or something that could make MLUG better, by all means do it. Burn
linux CDs, hang up flyers, help plan expos, put on a presentation--do
anything that you think will help. Your kindheartedness is appreciated,
and those who don't take kindness for what it is probably just
misunderstands.
I will continue to work at IATS doing computer security stuff; feel free
to contact me if you need help with Linux security, MU or non-MU
related. I don't want anyone to think that just because I'm resigning
means I'm unwilling to help, or turning my back on MU's linux community.
Technically, I should not even hold an office anymore. Our constitution
automatically resigns any officer that does not attend a meeting once a
month. Our lack of meetings is no excuse for this. Furthermore, my term is
one-year (as is everyone else's), meaning that, techinically, no one holds
office. I strongly encourage anyone interested in running for office to do
so. We need optimistic, intelligent people to steer MLUG in the right
direction. Since Jay pretty much is still our president, he would be the
one to direct messages to.
I'm not leaving MLUG, just resigning despite listed technicalities. I want
to help everyone in anyway I can. If you need linux CDs, security help,
installation help, etc., call me at work at 884-2260 or e-mail me at
EMAIL:PROTECTED and I'll do what time and ability will allow me to
do. Thank you. It's been a great ride. May everyone prosper in what they
do best, and hopefully use the ideals of the open source movement to get
there ;)
Regards,
Neil
