You might be able to get away with this, but the rest of the sound module
stack is probably not loaded by default. If you do put your module stuff
in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, make SURE to use:
modprobe es1371
or whatever name of the module you want loaded... That way any modules
that the es1371 module depends on get loaded first.
The best way to do this is to edit your /etc/conf.modules or
/etc/modules.conf (it varies with different versions of modutils, but
/etc/modules.conf should work) to automate the loading of your sound card
module. Add the line:
alias sound es1371
Again, changing the module name with the name of your sound module.
Reboot and everything should be hunky and soundful.
