Hi all. I just joined up with the MLUG a couple o' days ago...not that this
has any relevence......

...but I do have a few issues into which I thought maybe someone on the list
might have some valuable insight.

Anyway, I just installed redhat 7 on a friend's computer, which is a stock
HP pavilion microATX (junk) box. Everything went far more smoothly than
anticipated, except that the cd-RW (/dev/cdrom, an HP CD writer PLUS)
doesn't seem to want to behave. When I put a disc in it, the light blinks
(and doesn't ever stop) but it doesn't mount (or even spin up) and I can't
mount it manually. Furthermore, I can't eject the disc once I put it in...I
have to shut the box off and then turn it on and hit eject before I get to
lilo. I have not worked with cdrw's under linux, as I don't have one. The
DVD drive in the box works fine as /dev/cdrom1. Interestingly enough, I
used the cdrw for the install media when I put Linux on the machine in the
first place.

Also, in my machine, I have a Creative Labs Ensoniq audioPCI (someone just
mentioned these a few posts ago). It isn't detected in install, nor will
sndconfig work on it. I currently run
	insmod es1371
to make it work, and this works fine, except that I have to type it each
time I start my computer. Obviously, this is quite minor, and I could write
a startup script...but does anyone have a better way?

And last, but certainly not least. I recently got a geforce 2 ultra. man
was I proud. Unfortunately, now my X doesn't work. Says "no screens
found." The previous setup used a tnt2 ultra, so silly me, I figured it
would be painless. Anyway, I tried running kudzu, and then Xconfigurator,
and then hand-editing the XF86Config-4 file (since I run rh7, there is a
config file for 3.3.6 and 4). Shortly thereafter, my new power supply came
in (I am in the midst of upgrading to an athlon and needed more juice) and
when installed it promptly exploded (yes, literally exploded...sparks, fire,
loud bang, the whole deal)...killing both devices on my primary
IDE...including the hdd that had linux on it. That was bunk. Anyway, the
point is, i soon had the chance to run a fresh install with the new vid
card. But the installer went into the "old" mode (non X...the one I used
"backintheday" for redhat 5.2) after mentioning the same thing about "no
screens found."

Sorry to make my first post so interminably long; I've been having a bit of
bad luck lately (what with my computer blowing up and all...)

Thanks in advance to anyone who has any thoughts about any of these
problems.

Later

Hunter.
